UNIVERSITY 3
I’m currently studying for a Bachelor of Social Work degree at the
Magill Campus of the University of South Australia. One of the best things
about undertaking university studies is the flexibility in the way the
programs are offered, particularly if you are restricted due to a disability
or medical condition.
I’ve been studying for my degree part time for seven years, due
to the pain and fatigue I experience as part of my physical disability.
I use an electric wheelchair for mobility most of the time. Universities
are great because they offer students the option of studying through an
external mode, which is beneficial to those students who have very restricted
mobility or significant health care needs, and as a result need to study
within their own home environment. When you enrol in a program, it is
important that you identify as having a disability on the enrolment form.
And if you have any concerns or are afraid of what to expect at University,
I would suggest making an appointment to see the Program Director or Course
Co-ordinator prior to start of the enrolment or the new semester. For
extensions on assignments, special considerations in exams or in applying
for alternative assessments, Universities will always require medical
documentation or medical certificates in support of these requests. A
doctor or relevant health professional will be a key person who can really
support you in this process.
