INTRODUCTION 1
Deciding what to do beyond school can be difficult for some students. To make good decisions about pathways, a student, family/caregiver and teacher must be well informed regarding the options available. These decisions can be made in the Negotiated Education Plan and in the DECS Transition Plan. The Negotiated Education Plan identifies student’s strengths, needs and appropriate transition curriculum. The Transition Plan identifies the transition needs and agencies that student can be involved with to assist them in their pathways, and this Transition Plan starts in year 8.
And there are many pathways, including TAFE, Uni, Day Options, home business, new apprenticeships, traineeships, volunteering, recreation and many more. And some people mix pathways up and do two at the same time, for instance, sport, recreation, leisure and volunteering. The aim of this pathway resource is to demonstrate the range of pathways that exist, and have been successfully accessed by people with a disability. However, it’s really important to remember that you must be flexible, and sometime it’s necessary to modify your pathway, and above all, be resilient.
