Parent Forum Term 1 2021

Parents and carers of children and young people with a disability were invited to attend out first Parent Forum in 2021

With the theme ‘Outside the Box’, the day commenced with a Table Talk session where participants were asked to discuss ‘what has brought you here today and what do you expect to get from the day’ – the outcomes will be discussed by the Parent Forum Reference Group and will assist in planning for future forums.

Ian May, Director Disability Policy & Programs presented a session on Department Directions in 2021 incorporating inclusion. Ian made the analogy between Pluto originally deemed as a ‘planet’ and asking the participants to reflect on how globally our thinking has changed in regards to Pluto being a planet in much the same way as a student with disability’s right to an education has changed and continues to change. Globally, inclusive education is now deemed as the way forward. From the department’s viewpoint this means a focus on:

System: Set policy direction – Inclusive Teaching and Learning Directorate, connected guidance and support. growth at a state level.

Schools and Preschools: Establish whole school culture, frameworks, practices and agreements, target and provide support across school, growth at a school level.

Educators: Meet the needs of learners, provide a safe, challenging, and positive learning experience, growth at an individual level.

Participants had the opportunity to attend two workshops:

  1. “There is no funding, so there is no support?” – Debunking the myth (pdf)
  2. Dyslexia (reading and spelling difficulties) – Ways to help your child at home – see presentation below
  3. All about SERU (Special Education Resource Unit) – supports available
  4. What is important to parents/carers about the ‘One Plan’ – feedback session

If you had the opportunity to attend, we’d love to hear your feedback.
